WWII 2nd Pattern Attributed FS Commando Dagger – Item 117178
WWII 2nd pattern Fairbairn Sykes Commando Dagger belonging to Major C M F Deakin CB, CBE, Commanding Officer of 4th Tank Battalion Grenadier Guards, 6t Guards Tank Brigade. Grip has been over painted in a camouflage paint finish. Complete in its original leather scabbard. Double edged stiletto blade with Wilkinson Sword trade mark to one side and the reverse with the F.S. (Fighting Knife). Blade is also etched with the family crest of the Deakin family which is a Naval coronet with a dexter arm holding a battle axe. With this knife are his Guards Command Tank pennant, an officers canvas pouch with the initials ‘C.M.F.D’ inked to the front and tunic medal ribbon bar. Sold with career details photocopy. A rare and unique Commando Dagger.
Note: Major General Deakin was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1931. He is mentioned a number of times in the regimental war diary for the 4th Tank Battalion of the Grenadier Guards in 1944, on 1st November 1944, he is noted as taking over the command of the battalion in Liesel, he would have been in command of the battalion when they attacked on the 2nd November at Moostdijk, Holland. He continued to serve with the battalion throughout the campaign in North West Europe. After the war, he stayed with the British army and became the commander of the 32nd Guards Brigade in 1953, commander of the 29th Infantry Brigade in 1955 and Director of Military Training at the war office in January 1959. He held three other posts before retiring from the army in 1962.
