Third Reich and Post War U Boat Veterans Grouping – U 1232 – Item 87802

Excellent grouping of mementos from crew member Gerhard Schloffel of U 1232.  Type IX U boat for large ocean patrols. Grouping consists of period engine room notebook written up on board. Hand sketched maps. Various paperwork and notes. His wartime DAF membership book. His wartime savings book and Arbeitsbuch. Kriegsmarine book with rank plate to reverse. A nice framed photo of the U boat returning to port with crew on board. Various post war documents including driving license for 1948 when he became a member of the Fire Brigade plus his citation dated 1941 awarding him his Minesweeping badge. Plus post war commemorative plate commemorating their victory in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Shows U boat at Sea with Halifax above and dedication above (produced in limited numbers for crew members). Plus large brass plaque measuring 30cm x 20cm showing the harbour at Halifax that the U boat raided and dedication below for U 1232. Also his post war named U boat drinking stein with white metal pewter top and featuring U 1232 and dates 1943-45. A unique and personalised one mans grouping serving on U 1232. Worthy of much further research.

Note: She made one offensive patrol, from November 1944 to February 1945, to North America. On 14 January 1945, the boat torpedoed and sank three ships within 13 minutes near Halifax Harbour off the Atlantic coast of Canada.During this action she was damaged so severely that she was forced to return to base.
