008  Polish Fighter Ace Presentation Cigarette Case & Associated Ephemera
Beautiful chrome plated cigarette case engraved with 309th insignia and presented to Antoni Murkowski DFC, who flew with 309th Polish Fighter Squadron. Warrant Officer Murkowski was credited with destroying an ME 262 jet fighter on 9 April 1945. This highly decorated fighter pilot was awarded the DFC and Polish Medal of Valour. He was famously credited and had the distinction of being the first pilot to shoot down the famous Doodlebug (V1 Flying Bomb). Hitler’s secret terror weapon against the British people.

The grouping consists of chrome plated cigarette case with Polish 309th insignia to front and his initials above. Inside the names of the various pilots in his squadron which includes two further fighter pilot aces. Also his original wartime dated European air war maps named to him. A nice period photograph of Murkowski in flying uniform wearing Polish squadron badge, his original tunic medal bar (shown being worn in photograph), RAF tunic button and brass Polish military tunic button, pair of metal gilt RAF sweetheart dress wings. His Ferry Pilot qualification card for service after the war. A later photograph taken in 1992 of his retirement at RAF Mess at Wattishim. Various newspaper articles and photograph of him giving record of his service including his time training with the Polish air force before Poland was overrun and detailing his escape through Romania and Spain and arriving in France, where he flew with their air force until they were a victim of the German advance and he then escaped again to Liverpool in time to take part in the Battle of Britain - where he served in the City of Warsaw 316 Squadron flying Spitfires and later Mustangs. The photograph of when he was stationed at Andews Field with his squadron. A marvellous grouping to a well known Polish fighter ace who won the Polish Medal of Valour (equivalent to the British Victoria Cross).
